"The spirit of the legendary Freddie Mercury is alive and well and performing as Gary Mullen"

When Gary Mullen won ITV's 'Stars In Their Eyes' Grand Final in 2000 as Freddie Mercury, he began a fantastic journey which has so far taken him to virtually every theatre and concert hall in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Holland and New Zealand.

His sell-out concerts are receiving rave reviews from audiences of all ages together with his band 'The Works'.

They have recently appeared for the 'BBC's Proms in the Park' in Hyde Park, London, alongside Andrea Bocelli, Simply Red, and G4.

The 40,000 strong audience joined Gary and the boys in rebel rousing renditions of 'Radio Ga Ga', 'We Are the Champions' 'Somebody to Love' and 'It's A Kind Of Magic'

The Performance

The Winter Gardens annual talent contest "Search for a Star" supported by  (BRADA) is having a new look for 2008. This year we are no longer holding audition days its been replaced with heats throughout July. Wannabe finalists must complete an ENTRY FORM and state what dates they are available. Once we have received the completed form we can then allocate a date for the performers. The acts must arrive at the Winter Gardens in the afternoon on their given date and perform their act. Only the 6 best performances will participate in the Live Stage Show that evening, with 3 places for the Local Final on each heat up for grabs, the tension should be high. The heats are part of a Professional Live Stage Show produced and starring BBC Radio Kent's "Paul James" and his partner in crime "Billy Nutt". The acts will each have a 4 minute spot in the show which gives them a great opportunity by performing along side seasoned professionals such as Paul and Billy. The winner of the Local Final will receive a Cash Prize of £700, a place to represent Margate at the National Finals and an interview "Live On Air" on BBC Radio Kent.

Last year's National Finals was held at "The Spa Centre" in Leamington Spa, it was at this event when Margate was voted by BRADA and the other resorts to host the National Event in 2008.

If you have a talent, whether you can sing, dance, plate spin or whatever, it's not too early to send your details to the Winter Gardens, Margate

Joe Longthorne
The Performance

This talented artist began his career over three decades ago with appearances on Junior Showtime, followed by a grounding on the tough Northern club circuit.

His big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on London Weekend Television's Search for a Star - this lead to appearances at the London Palladium with Bob Hope and The Talk of the Town. A short time later, Joe received the Variety Club of Britain award as Most Promising Artiste of the Year. Television specials in the UK and USA followed.

Joe's repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world's top singers, however, he is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has commented, "Joe can do me better than I can do myself".

During his career, Joe has received gold and platinum discs for his albums, enjoyed sell-out concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as touring Australia several times.

Now, Joe is looking forward to new challenges, new songs to sing and new audiences to thrill.
